separate from the debt ceiling. >> raising the debt ceiling does not authorize us to spend more. all it does is say that america will pay its bills, and we are not a deadbeat nation. >> clearly house speaker john boehner thinks differently. he responded by saying, quote, the american people do not support raising the debt ceiling without reducing government spending at the same time. >>> these pens are designed to be used only by one person, but an investigation discovered that many of them were used on multiple people. >>> are you in hawaii or going there anytime soon? surfers, beware. check out this video. it's a real-life jauss. two sharks were swimming dangerously close to the show. can you believe it? look at that. you could wade in and be bitten, eaten. last year there were a total of 11 shark attacks in hawaii. >> that's what i call dangerously close. >> oh, my goodness. >> so some people in the southeast waking up to the dual danger of flooding and ice. alexandra steele in the weather center. good morning. >> good morning, guys. each snow potentially for you around new york c

telling the world, folks, next week we will authorize a three-month temporary debt ceiling increase. that was the announcement from the majority leader of the house republicans announcing they are giving up on what they had been saying for months was their plan, to not approve an increase in the debt ceiling to thereby push the country again into a self-imposed economic crisis and threat of defaulting on our national debt, and all of the economic panic, we know that causes, because they did it before, thaw they did it in 2011, and eric cantor announced today they are not going to do that again, even though they had been saying for months that they would. they gave up today on that threat. that's why the vix panic index stopped panicking today. that's the nice kickoff for what should be a nice weekend for the president. >>> the white house unveiled the new official portrait. the second term one to refresh your memory. this is the first term one. same flag pin, similar blue tie, i guess. lots more gray up top. i don't know why they decided to go from the close cropped i.d. photo look

. i mean, i think it would be, frankly, another disaster if republicans try to use the debt ceiling, to force dollar-for-dollar budget reductions. i don't see that as a winner for them, and i can't imagine at least the party establishment is now seeing that as a potential winner for them. i mean, you know, face it. the president won the election. and he laid out a program and a philosophy, and he won the election on it. and i think as long as republicans are going to take the stance that he didn't win and that, in fact, they won and therefore they get to do things their way, i don't think -- i don't see how that's going to help them get out of that 14% hole. >> eugene, nbc.com had a very interesting way of putting it this morning, a very nice tag which is that what the electorate is looking for right now is not so much hope but a president who can cope. it's all about coping, not so much hoping. do you think that this kind of poll suggests that he is going to be able to deliver on that message of coping? >> well, you know, first of all, i think that's right. i think that, you know,
